For the competition for the extension of Hotel Bellevue in Benešov near Prague, we designed a contemporary addition that sensitively builds on the original concept by architect Ladislav Lábus. Our aim was not to create contrast at all costs – rather, to complement the existing structure in a way that feels natural and respects both the topography of Karlov hill and the scale of the surrounding built environment.
The new elements are divided into smaller volumes that gradually rise towards the hilltop. The composition builds as it ascends, creating a focal point without disrupting the panorama of Benešov. The architecture is formally restrained and materially unified. Simplicity here is not a limitation, but a tool for achieving a calm and compact expression.
A key moment of the design is the wellness centre with a swimming pool. Part of the programme is embedded in the terrain to keep the building proportionate in scale. The reception, changing rooms, and showers are lit by clerestory windows that provide natural light while ensuring privacy. The pool itself rises above the terrain and opens towards the city, offering panoramic views, a true “bellevue.”
The hotel is extended by 13 new double rooms and 14 parking spaces. In the attic, we propose a conference hall with an independent circulation core and the option of a separate entrance from the small square, allowing flexible use for both public and corporate events.
We believe our proposal represents a contemporary, humble, and functionally considered extension of the hotel. Architecture that does not rewrite the place, but develops it.
